THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

Written by F. Andrew Leslie
Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson

Directed by Jerry Hurley
Show dates: October 23 - November 13, 2010

Auditions:
Tuesday, June 29th at 7:30pm
Thursday, July 1st at 7:30pm

Callbacks (by invitation only):
Thursday, July 8th at 7:30pm

IBased on a novel from the author of “The Lottery”, one of literature’s most shocking short stories, comes a psychological thriller that was the source for the 1963 film The Haunting. Shirley Jackson spins a first-class ghost story -- a chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror that brings a group of “psychically receptive” individuals to a brooding Victorian mansion known as a place of evil. Supernatural phenomena abound in this spellbinding mystery.

AUDITION DETAIL

  • Eleanor Vance - plain-looking girl in her late twenties to early thirties. She has a sense that there is something very strange about the house and is the one most directly affected by all that goes on. She was asked to come to Hill House because of a previous psychic experience.

  • Mrs. Dudley - she is the housekeeper who is a stern, uncommunicative woman of sixty or so who moves about without making any sound and can best be described by these words she uses throughout: “ I don’t stay after I set out dinner. Not after it begins to get dark. I leave before dark comes.”

  • Theodora - She is approximately the same age or slightly older than Eleanor but very exotic looking; A creature of mood and sudden impulses. She also is at HH because of a psychic experience.

  • Dr. Montague - The script says he is roly-poly, and bearded, but this is not a specific requirement for the character. He does wear steel-rimmed glasses and has a distinctly professional air. He is in his late 50's to early 60's.

  • Luke Sanderson - He is good looking in his early 30's and has a disturbing charm with a well-educated but usually empty mind.

  • Mrs. Montague - A large, formidable woman, quite dominant and overpowering; she is in charge of the household. She should be a few years younger than professor Montague.

  • Arthur Parker - is a meek but intense-looking man of an indeterminate age. He comes to help Mrs. Montague, and he thinks he knows it all.

Scripts will be in the play and casting box from Monday June 14th on. If you need to keep a script longer than 3 to 4 days please make a copy for yourself and return the script so that others have access to it.

Please read carefully the script before coming. All of the actresses will be asked to audition for the laughter and related sounds, whether or not you are cast as one of the characters.

All descriptions are being kept somewhat general so that each actor can create his/her own interpretation of the part. Especially for the parts of Mrs. Dudley, Mrs. Montague and Arthur, stay away from any stereotype of characterization.

Read over these pages for the audition:
Eleanor-Theodora-Mrs. Dudley pages 6-10
Mrs. Dudley p-11 to top of 12
Luke-Dr. Montague pp 23-25 bottom and page 28-31 add Theo and Eleanor.
Mrs. Montague - Mr. M -Theo-Arthur-Eleanor-Luke pp 45 to bottom of 48
Mrs. Montague-Arthur - p - 53 to middle of 54

THE COCKTAIL HOUR

Written by A.R. Gurney
Directed by Iris Weinhouse

Auditions:
Monday, September 20th at 7:30pm
Wednesday, September 22nd at 7:30pm

Callbacks (by invitation only):

At a time when many families rarely even have dinner together, the significance of the daily cocktail hour may be difficult to understand. Still, everything surrounding Gurney’s typical WASP family is on the “up and up”...as in “upper crust”, “upper class” and “stiff-upper-lip”. Or is it? Gurney’s crisis-in-family comic plot is all about the family’s tics, as well as what makes them tick.

AUDITION DETAIL

Roles - 4 characters: 2 Men, 2 Women

Bradley - early 70s - wealthy - WASP - wants everything to stay the same, especially in his family

Ann - late 60's-early 70s - his wife - agrees with her husband (naturally) but more sympathic to her children - hiding a sceret

John - 40-45 - their oldest child - a publisher during the day and a budding playwright at night -looking for parental approval

Ann- 40ish their middle child and only daughter - Living the typical life of a suburban wife and mother with stomach ailments because she can't follow her dream
