CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Lala Levy - (20s) Attractive in an ethnic sense of the word.  She has dark wavy hair and brown eyes.  She is very anxious and socially awkward.  She doesn't see her worth and is very jealous of her cousin Sunny.

Reba Freitag - (late 40s-mid 50s) Mother of Sunny.  Sister-in-Law to Boo and Adolph.  She is sweet and simple.  Always a kind world for everyone.  Can have light hair and light eyes but not essential.

Boo Levy - (50s) Mother of Lala.  Sister to Adolph.  Sister-in-law to Reba.  Very no nonsense woman.  A bit resentful of others she deems had it any easier than her.  Anxious about her daughter's prospects in life.  She is not unkind just to the point.

Adolph Freitag - (50s) Brother of Boo and brother-in-law of Reba.  Took over the family business when his brother and brother-I- law died. Loves his family but a no nonsense type of man.  Funny and sarcastic at times.  Supports everyone but doesn't resent it.

Joe Farkas - (mid 20s-early 30s) A smart hard working Jewish man from NY.  Takes a job working in the Freitag family business.  Enjoys his Jewish heritage.  Falls in love with Sunny.  Somewhat lost in the world of Southern customs and Southern Jews.

Sunny Freitag - (20s) Smart beautiful woman.  Blond hair.  Light eyes. Finishing up college.  Liberal and more open minded than her family. Daughter of Reba.  Cousin to Lala.  Falls in love with Joe.

Peachy Weil - (20s-early 30s) Son from a wealthy southern family.  Red or strawberry blond hair. Very southern with an offbeat sense of humor. Takes Lala to Ballyhoo

The Freitags are a very well to do Southern, Jewish family in Atlanta, Georgia in 1939.  They live on the "fashionable area" of town and have assimilated into Atlanta society as much as a Jewish family can, sacrificing any remnants of their Jewish heritage in the process.  When the family patriarch hires a young Jewish man from NY to come help run the family business the entire family is forced to confront who they are and what they are.  Set against the Atlanta opening of Gone with the Wind and the annual formal party (Ballyhoo) for the young Jewish people in the south, it is a funny and at times very moving story of two worlds that collide and then reshape.

We will do readings from the script.  Please be familiar with it.  Any questions please email me at carol.fisher@optonline.net
